Next Generation Bamboo: Approaching the Contemporary Development of Bamboo with Innovative Thinking

Bamboo for the Next Generation

✦ ✦ Catching up with the global green new trend ✦ ✦
With intensifying extreme weather and environmental pollution, countries have successively rolled out net-zero emission initiatives. The Taiwan government is also promoting the 2050 "net-zero transition" plan, hoping to minimize greenhouse gas emissions through negative carbon technologies and forest carbon sinks; global sustainability action has become urgent.

✦ ✦ 2024 World Bamboo Congress in Taiwan ✦ ✦
Taiwan will host the World Bamboo Congress (World Bamboo Congress - Taiwan 2024) in 2024, presenting it in the form of a bamboo forum and exhibition in conjunction with the "Framework Program for the Development of Emerging Bamboo Industries," coordinated by the Forestry Bureau of the Council of Agriculture of the Executive Yuan. This will be Taiwan's first major event dedicated to "bamboo." During the preparation period from 2022 to 2024, it is hoped that multiple events will be launched across Taiwan to invite everyone to participate in this grand event. This forum is the first prelude event leading up to the 2024 World Bamboo Forum and Exhibition.

✦ ✦2022 Taiwan Bamboo Forum: From Sustainable Design to Green Economy, New Value Chain of Taiwan Bamboo Architecture✦ ✦
What is Next Generation Bamboo? With a carbon sequestration capacity six times greater than wood, mechanical strength exceeding 70 percent of steel, and a growing period of only four years before it can be utilized, Taiwanese bamboo has become a highly sought-after, eco-friendly structural material with great potential. This December, the Taiwan Bamboo Forum will spark a "Next Generation Bamboo" green economic wave. Connecting the public and private sectors, the industry supply chain, and academia, the event will explore "Solution - Ecological Solutions," "Fashion - Lifestyle Waves," and "Innovation - Production Mindsets" to reveal a new sustainable economy centered around Taiwanese bamboo architecture.

Innovation >>> Hsinchu-Miaoli Industry Innovation

Theme 1: Circular Economy vs. Business Model / Industrial Mindset

10:20am-12:10pm

Unlocking the future of Taiwan's bamboo relies not only on modern craftsmanship and innovative technology, but also on a transformative mindset in the bamboo industry! From the perspective of someone familiar with the upstream and downstream of Taiwan's bamboo industry and closely following global trends, we will jointly discuss the innovative industrial model of "bamboo," an environmentally friendly structural material with great potential. Several successful cases of promoting Taiwanese bamboo in the international market will be presented. Starting from an in-depth source-level study, we will explore how new manufacturing processes are used to finely grind bamboo into powder for reprocessing, turning it into a globally popular eco-friendly utensil. We will also observe how step-by-step it builds a mass-producible industrial chain, combining local revitalization to bring jobs and economic benefits to local communities. We look forward to inspiring startup communities across all sectors to rethink the value of "bamboo" through this sharing process.

Solution >>> Hsinchu Science Park Net-Zero Carbon Emissions

Theme 2: Net-Zero Carbon Emissions vs. International Carbon Tax / Ecological Solutions

1:10 PM - 3:00 PM

From an international perspective and in the face of future environmental and energy crises, bamboo is not the only solution, but it holds an extremely advantageous position, especially for us in Taiwan. How to use Taiwanese bamboo to respond to the net-zero targets proposed by various countries and deploy a series of related green strategies needs to be solved from the roots. By deeply exploring carbon neutrality-related expertise, including the calculation methods for carbon credits, carbon taxes, and carbon sinks, as well as how to apply for and obtain international certification, Taiwanese enterprises can easily step into the world. The Bamboo Forum not only starts from the concept of net-zero, but also proposes precise solutions, enabling the green competitiveness of enterprises and even the country to be comprehensively enhanced.

Theme 3: Bamboo Structure Value vs. Contemporary Design / Lifestyle Wave

3:05 PM - 4:55 PM

Humanity is gradually returning to its essence and re-advocating for eco-friendly, low-carbon green materials. Viewed with this attitude, bamboo will become a sustainable element that aligns with current trends, as well as a green business opportunity that cannot be ignored. Today, a rising wave of bamboo utilization can be sensed around the world and in Taiwan, and Taiwan's past experience with bamboo craftsmanship serves as an important foundation for us to reshape this bamboo wave. The domestic bamboo forum in December specially invited three speakers from fields related to "bamboo architecture." Centered around Taiwanese bamboo craftsmanship, they will inspire various sectors regarding the diversity of bamboo applications—ranging from architectural structures, technological applications, and cutting-edge forms of modern digital design, to the perspective of installation art—discussing the multiple scales of bamboo architecture. At the same time, the event also promotes the "Bamboo Architecture Talent Cultivation Program" jointly launched by the Taiwan Bamboo Society and the Forestry Bureau, which teaches the use of bamboo materials from design to hands-on implementation, thereby nurturing Taiwan's young bamboo generation.
