Between reality and illusion, expressing the three stages divided by time: "past," "present," and "future."
Method
Time is an inseparable yet relatively unreal abstraction to us. Could it be that in another dimension, time is a tangible object?
Actually, the past, the present, and the future have never disappeared. It is just like standing on a railway platform, watching trains pull in, stop, and pull out of the station. The essence of the trains is always there, they are just not within our field of vision.
The future is unknown, and no one can know what it looks like in advance. Therefore, by using the technique of displaced bamboo, when the artwork moves on the frame, the image flashes by in an instant, making it impossible to fully see through.
NOW is the connection between the past and the future. Through the imagery of the gaps between the bamboo, the image of the current viewer appears, representing the present state—real and clear. The half-section of bamboo is slowly replaced by the present at this moment.
The past is an established fact and cannot be changed. By using the complete form of bamboo—an object that has already taken its final shape—as a medium of expression, it symbolizes that everything in the past is unshakeable, firm, and lofty.
History
In addition to considering the balance between the solid and the void of the bamboo and the gaps in the final work, this design also tests the balance between design and technology during construction. While the focus of the design seems to emphasize the variations of the bamboo suspended in the middle, the construction challenge actually lies in the structures on both sides, which suspend the bamboo off the ground by transmitting forces to resist gravity and sagging.
