Rattan peel has adorned Taiwanese bamboo craft since the Japanese colonial period, just as you can always accidentally spot butterflies hovering on the handles of various bamboo utensils. As a rattan weaving technique, "butterfly hovering" uses an X-shaped wrapping structure to make the parallel, diagonally overlapping rattan peels form a gradient, creating an aesthetic resembling butterfly wings, hence the name.
