April 23–25: Time Bamboo Art Workshop x Green Abundance Lifestyle Exhibition @ Far Eastern SOGO Zhongxiao Branch

In the hustle and bustle of daily life, is there a place where you can sit quietly and feel the flow of time and the moving experience of something being created from nothing? In early April, Taiwan Bamboo Society presents "Miniature Time Bamboo Craft Workshop x Rokumei-ami Wreath x Plain-Woven Glass," which will have a limited-time residency at the "Far Eastern SOGO Zhongxiao x Taipei Farmers' Market"—

Bamboo art is the process of taking nature, formed step by step, and using one's hands—pressing and weaving—to solve everyday problems and create a stylish life of one's own. In the Little Time Bamboo Craft Classroom, the fresh, warm, and fast-renewing nature of bamboo will be embodied through your hands in a retro-futuristic way.

Does craftsmanship always feel rough and heavy? If you are worried about getting calluses, you can put your mind completely at ease. Two young bamboo artisans, Ya-ching and Hui-ting, are just like the bamboo art they create—fresh, bright, and radiant. Bamboo craftsmanship can be clean and fashionable, too!

This activity is especially recommended for

  • For you who value the quality of life: Returning to the essence of materials, combining both beauty and utility
  • For those who value tactile warmth: Bamboo weaving relies entirely on human hands, infusing every single detail with warmth.
  • For you, who values the ecological environment: Bamboo regenerates quickly and does not reduce forests.

Bamboo Weaving Workshop 1: Essence Workshop x Flower and Bamboo: Handmade Kagome-編 Wreath

Craft often returns to the essence of materials. Materials, much like people, have their own unique appearance and personality; it all depends on how the creator uses and pairs them. ── Ya-Ching Lee / Origin Creative Studio

This experiential class will teach Rinkō-ami, a bamboo weaving technique frequently used for lanterns in Taiwan's past bamboo industry history. From weaving the Rinkō-ami of a wreath to finishing it off, you will complete your own circle step-by-step through an over-one, under-one weaving method. Incorporating contemporary home decor concepts, "Blossom Bamboo" transforms the orientation of the traditional lantern's Rinkō-ami, pairing it with dried and semi-preserved flowers to create a highlight in your living space.

Adorn your daily life with the natural beauty of handcrafted bamboo wreaths. Turn it around to appreciate a different kind of bamboo beauty.

Bamboo Craft Course 2: Bamboo Workshop x Bamboo-Glass Cup Holder: Handmade Plain-Woven Bamboo Cup Holder

Bamboo craftsmanship is a craft that spans all ethnic groups, including Indigenous peoples, Hoklo, and Hakka. How to unlock the secrets of contemporary life from past techniques is best left to bamboo itself.

If factory production symbolizes ready-made cheapness, the process of handmade craftsmanship means making the beauty you desire no longer rely on the hands of others.

This experiential workshop will explain and teach various techniques of Tainan's traditional bamboo craftsmanship. Huiting will extract contemporary design thinking from traditional crafts to decorate glass bottle bodies using different techniques. You can choose to play it safe, or try to secretly learn a little extra along the way!
