2024 Taiwan Bamboo Expo and World Bamboo Forum

The 2024 Bamboo Expo is Taiwan's first exposition centered on "bamboo," featuring exhibits across six dimensions: "Planting," "Technology," "Architecture," "Art," "Education," and "Dining," showcasing Taiwan's bamboo culture and related industrial development. Designed in a unique "decentralized" and "wherever bamboo is" format rather than the traditional centralized exhibition, the 2024 Bamboo Expo spans five regions across counties and cities including Hsinchu, Nantou, Yunlin, Chiayi, and Hualien. Each of the five exhibition areas features its own unique content, taking turns to respond to the shared theme of "bamboo." Through rich and diverse exhibition and activity formats, we invite you to come to "wherever bamboo is" to learn about bamboo and experience its beauty!

The "World Bamboo Forum" portion invites international professionals in the bamboo field to Taiwan to exchange and interact with local Taiwanese counterparts. The forum venues are distributed across Hsinchu and Nantou, with themes covering three major dimensions: "Sustainable Development and Green Economy," "Technology and Manufacturing Innovation," and "Contemporary Design Application." Key members and researchers from domestic and international bamboo sectors gather to discuss the green economy, processing, manufacturing, and innovative applications of bamboo amidst the global trend of carbon reduction, and to ponder the future direction of bamboo for the next generation.

The 2024 Bamboo Expo and World Bamboo Congress takes "Next-Generation Bamboo" as its core spirit. Through curated content, exhibitions, and in-depth academic and industrial exchanges, it aims to elevate the bamboo industry and culture to new heights. In an era where the world places great emphasis on environmental and ecological sustainability, Taiwan is keeping pace with the global community by utilizing bamboo for sustainable and low-carbon development, striving for the future of the next generation!

Next-Generation Bamboo
Bamboo for the Next Generation

Taiwan possesses abundant bamboo forest resources, with bamboo forests widespread across low- and mid-altitude mountainous regions and bamboo of excellent quality, making it a precious resource uniquely endowed to Taiwan. In the past, bamboo was used extensively, ranging from small everyday utensils to large-scale architecture. Present all around in daily life, it was a material with which people were most familiar. Bamboo is not only a material, but has also become a part of culture. The qualities of simplicity, versatility, flexibility, and adaptability embodied in bamboo have given rise to a distinct mindset and spirit that long ago integrated into folk culture. However, in the process of modernization, the advent of mass-produced mechanical manufacturing combined with the use of artificial materials has led to a gradual decline in the use of bamboo. As bamboo has slowly faded from daily life, Taiwan's bamboo industry has also lost its former prosperity.

In contrast, internationally, driven by the demands for environmental sustainability and energy conservation and carbon reduction, countries around the world have gradually recognized the characteristics of bamboo: its extremely rapid growth, tough fibers, and carbon sequestration and oxygen generation capacities that are many times higher than those of trees, making bamboo highly valued. Even in regions where bamboo does not grow, scholars and experts are actively engaged in the research and development of bamboo applications, approaching bamboo with technology and achieving innovation through research. Beyond gaining a profound scientific understanding of bamboo material, they are also expanding its performance through composite materials. Under the collective global consensus in pursuit of environmental sustainable development and the urgent demand for "net-zero carbon emissions," bamboo has transformed from an inconspicuous grass into an important element with vast development potential. Driven by changing environmental conditions, the concepts of "substituting bamboo for wood" and "substituting bamboo for plastic" are gradually becoming mainstream.

The 2024 Taiwan Bamboo Expo and World Bamboo Forum is a monumental event in Taiwan's bamboo sector and a declaration of the rediscovery and renewed appreciation of "bamboo." In this era of global environmental change and emerging new challenges, looking at "bamboo" both honors the past and inspires the future: we cherish our bamboo culture, re-examine the developmental trajectory of Taiwan's bamboo industry and culture, and actively embrace the future. By applying new knowledge and technologies to consider bamboo's future applications, we aim to make greater contributions to environmental and ecological sustainability. Much like the inner order revealed in the visual identity of this event, this multi-site initiative, which brings together domestic and international organizations, embodies four key spirits and expectations: combing through the developmental trajectory of Taiwan's bamboo industry and culture, fostering communication and community building among relevant organizations and individuals, re-evaluating the conditions, opportunities, and challenges in related fields, and contemplating the future development of the bamboo sector for the next generation!
