Light Festival—Curatorial Introduction and Concept

Why is it called the Longci Light Festival (literally "Empty Mountain Festival")? "The empty mountain is not empty."

This year's Longqi Light Festival takes "Empty Mountain" as its theme, aiming to show everyone that even the rural district of Longqi can be brimming with vitality. The term "Empty Mountain" was derived from urbanization and population concentration.

Hills Festival invites everyone to Longqi to experience the beauty of nature, the rich cultural and historical heritage, and the creative energy of the artists' works,Feel the abundant energy of "The Empty Mountains Are Not Empty"!

The legend of Longci Light Festival: "The earth serpent slithers, the Mirror Basin is reborn"

Using the legends of Longqi—the Mirror Window and the Snake Demon—as the curation concept for this year's Longqi Light Festival, storytelling-based curation is also a major highlight of the event, which is similarly reflected in the visual design: (Excerpt from the Longqi Light Festival exhibition catalog)

  • Wojing Window

Wojing Window is located at the center of the local seven hills and serves as the epicenter of the ancient Longqi dragon vein known as the "Seven Stars Falling to Earth." "Its form resembles an open window with a mirror screen. On clear days, peering through the window toward the screen, one can see the distant Red-Haired Tower." Legend has it that from Chihkan Tower, Wojing Window looks like a giant mirror. Furthermore, the significance of this geomantic site is that, at the appropriate time, it will successively produce "seven civil officials and thirteen military generals," which will bring everlasting prosperity and prominence to the region.

  • Legend of the Snake Spirit:

Once upon a time, there was a giant snake in Wujingchuang Cave, and the light from its eyeballs could reach a thousand li. It is said that in Tainan City, when women combed their hair and applied makeup, as long as they faced the direction of Wujingchuang, they felt as if there were a bright mirror before them, allowing them to groom themselves freely without holding a mirror. Today, above the entrance of Wujingchuang Cave, there are thirteen window-like patterns resembling the circular arc of a rainbow, which look like the shape of a giant snake coiled up. These legends and stories tell us that Longqi was once a prosperous hometown with a rich cultural history that connected the north and the south.

I recommend everyone to check out the Light Festival (Longci Light Festival) promotional video!! It was filmed by Golden Horse Film Festival animation director Zhan Bo-jun, and the animation is gorgeous 👉 https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=2810561929157226

Why does Lumina Festival extensively use bamboo for curation?

The importance of bamboo in Longqi dates back to the Japanese colonial period; when Taiwan entered the Japanese colonial era in 1895, the Japanese, who originally came from higher latitudes and colder climates, brought the need for charcoal heating into Taiwan.

Because the Longqi area has low humidity and is relatively drier, the charcoal produced is flammable and of good quality. Starting in the 1910s, burning wood and bamboo charcoal gradually became a sideline in the Longqi area. With the development of the charcoal-burning industry, the demand for containers to hold bamboo charcoal also increased. Longqi, which already had abundant long-branch bamboo resources, began weaving "charcoal baskets," specialized containers used to pack and sell charcoal, as well as "huohong," tools used for heating. These are bamboo utensils woven with a star-shaped (mi-character) base and a rim-woven opening, inside of which an earthenware bowl is placed. Heated bamboo charcoal can be placed inside the bowl, allowing people to carry it around for warmth.

Part of Zhushan's bamboo charcoal industry draws inspiration from Tainan's Longqi and Dongshan!

"The car is here! The car is here!" Women hurriedly brought the vases, rice-washing baskets, and fish traps they had made at home to the traders driving luxury cars, exporting them to European and American markets to earn some money to supplement their household expenses.

In the Longqi area of Tainan around 1960, the farmlands were filled with Thorny Bamboo instead of pineapple fields. While the men went out to work, women in every household were busy splitting bamboo strips and weaving bamboo panels, and children played happily nearby.
That era of bamboo craftsmanship was so glorious that there was even a saying: "The living room is the factory..." Yet, a century later, it is unknown and neglected by everyone. What on earth happened in between?

Tips for visiting an exhibition

  • Everyone loves the super cute light-bug bamboo lanterns given out at the Longci Light Festival entrance, but they have to be returned at the end. 😢
It's okay, they are actually available for purchase at the venue! The "Tainan Bamboo Association - Bamboo is Fun" booth at the "Qiju Market" right across from the exhibition entrance sells them!
  • There is a limit to the number of people allowed on the suspension bridge at the entrance, so you have to wait in line for 30 to 40 minutes to enter. 😲
However, when you're bored, you can play the mobile game "Empty Mountain Brave," which is a great way to learn about the story of Longqi's bamboo industry (💡Leave a comment saying "Hollow Mountain Brave" under this post to get early access to the game!

The car parking lot was far from the past exhibition area, and we also had to take a shuttle bus (which took a long time to wait for and was very crowded).

  • The Doomsday Tranquilizer Gun: A video beside the toilet

It is said that the 3D effect is a bit weird and easily scares young children to tears.

Longevity Mountain Festival—Merchandise Introduction

Kongshan Dafeng Ceremony - Pineapple Lampshade

The pineapple lampshade, valued at over a thousand NT dollars, is made using exquisite bamboo weaving techniques. Recently, Tainan's Longqi and Guanmiao are most widely known for their sprawling pineapple fields, and "Guanmiao Canned Pineapple" is a childhood memory for many. However, before pineapples became the "triple crown" in 1968, Tainan was actually dominated by long-branch bamboo forests.

photobionic bamboo lamp

Cute and stylish photogenic bamboo lamps look just like fireflies in the night-shrouded mountain. They might just evoke memories of the 1960s, when over seventy percent of the population in Tainan's Longqi and Guanmiao districts was engaged in bamboo strip production—you might have even seen your grandparents making bamboo lamps when you were a child! You can buy the light-bug bamboo lantern at the "Taiwan Tainan Bamboo Association - Bamboo is Fun" booth in the Qiju Market!

Bamboo shoot lamp

As you enter Baizhu Garden, you’ll be greeted by a dazzling array of bamboo crafts, including bamboo shoot lamps crafted from layers of translucent bamboo paper—their realism is off the charts! Have you ever tried creative dishes combining pineapple and bamboo shoots in Tainan?
