Hexagonal weaving is one of the basic techniques of traditional bamboo craftsmanship, offering multiple advantages such as requiring fewer bamboo strips while providing good load-bearing capacity and being easily bendable into three-dimensional shapes, which is why it is widely used to make various bamboo containers.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to Tainan bamboo artisan Tsai Hui-ting, hexagon weaving may be a traditional Taiwanese bamboo handicraft technique, and the application of hexagon weaving in everyday utensils can be found across various ethnic groups; in traditional agricultural society, the shadow of hexagon weaving could be seen in agricultural and fishing implements such as bamboo baskets, fruit baskets, chicken coops, and conical hats.<\/p>\n

The gaps in the hexagonal weave surface show multiple hexagons, and the outward-extending gaps present small triangles. Viewed from the bamboo strips, they appear as multiple hexagrams with a linear repeating structure.<\/p>\n

According to interviews on the difficulty of bamboo craft transmission, the traditional technique of hexagonal weaving is rated a difficulty of 5 (out of a total of 5 points). Although hexagonal weaving has a higher learning difficulty, it is generally considered a technique with a high return on investment. It can be used to make a variety of bamboo utensils and can also be combined with pattern weaving for styling. In terms of weaving, it is divided into two types: traditional techniques and contemporary teaching techniques:<\/p>\n

traditional hexagon weaving technique<\/h2>\n

Accelerating the weaving speed through a rotating weaving surface is a technique familiar only to veteran artisans, and it requires a meticulous understanding of the triangular structure of hexagon weaving. When making large items such as four-eye baskets, the person must also walk around the weaving surface. This method of weaving while rotating has the advantage of making every stitch of the hexagon weave (the shapes formed by the gaps) neat and uniform. Although this traditional technique is fast and yields precise results, once production begins, it must be completed in one continuous effort without stopping midway, making it less suitable for teaching.<\/p>\n

To efficiently make conical hats and bamboo shields, the veteran artisan also uses specially made molds, placing the materials on the mold and working while rotating them using traditional techniques. The hexagonal grid of each hat is of a similar size, making the process fast and precise. The chair supporting the mold is commonly known as an \"yi-ma-zai.\"<\/span><\/p>\n

Hexagonal weaving tutorial techniques<\/b><\/h2>\n

Unlike the traditional technique of hexagonal weaving which relies on a rotating method, the instructional technique first marks the center point and then evenly adjusts the small triangular grids within the hexagram-like structure to make every hexagonal grid square; the instructional technique is slower in craftsmanship compared to the traditional technique.<\/p>\n

The instructional technique of hexagonal weaving involves piecing together six triangular structures to form a hexagram (hexagonal lattice) pattern. Every bamboo strip that makes up the triangles must be woven in an over-and-under pattern to create a structural cycle, which ensures the finished product is both aesthetically pleasing and sturdy. If even a single strip fails to follow this interlocking cyclical structure, it will cause the shape of the hexagonal bamboo ware to warp and result in poor durability.<\/p>\n

According to the bamboo craft heritage difficulty interview, the teaching technique difficulty of hexagonal weaving is rated 4 points (out of a total of 5 points).<\/p>\n
