Concept Explanation
The site of this case is located in the woods north of the sawmill complex, also along the bank of the sawmill's former log storage pond. "Fishing by the northern marsh while taking advantage of the tender clear weather; pillow-flowing cypress logs lie horizontally before my eyes." The former log storage pond of the sawmill.In addition to serving as a place for soaking raw timber, it was also an important living space for nearby residents and children at the time, and can serve as a representative of the collective memory of Chiayi's forestry industry back then.
Bamboo is a material that must be experienced firsthand in order to understand how to use it. Therefore, we believe that bamboo can serve as a form of reverse construction: while pursuing the advancement of construction civilization, it enhances the connection between architecture and people through reverse construction. With this understanding, by harnessing the characteristics of bamboo, we attempt to engage in a dialogue with contemporary users.
Here, we introduce a space for lingering, gazing, and contemplation, extending the bending moment of bamboo like sparkling ripples. Through this continuous resonance and a dialogue with the time and space of this site, the wind, light, and tree shadows are all allowed to dwell within, fusing with the viewer's most primal perception.
Development process
A tension system formed by curved arches creates a bridge-like tunnel space. The tunnel entrance faces the grassland of the cultural park, and the elevated ground offers a view of the entire area. Imagining the log storage ponds that once occupied the entire site, the belly of the curved arch echoes the mounds rising on the base.
In addition to the excellent axial compression and tensile strength of the components themselves, the toughness inherent in bamboo is irreplaceable by other building materials. We use a combination of arches and counter-arches to express the structural stability of bamboo in a bent state. Beyond conveying a new structural form, when users enter it, they can also perceive the various changes of the bamboo under stress.
