Traveling through the tunnel of intertwined light and shadow, images of past railway tracks transporting timber slowly emerge. Travelers pick up those lost good times of the past, and fragments of history once left behind are picked up again.Carrying the burden of history with arched bamboo, three types of arches intertwine to form a stable structure while creating railway-like light and shadows.
Nurturing life in a greenhouse, looking forward to rebirth
Looking back at past prosperity through the tunnel, using everyday materials (bamboo and greenhouse agricultural film) and new construction methods, we look forward to the rebirth of an industry friendly to the land.
Development process
Roast bamboo will spring back, so by fixing the base of the bamboo arch, the elasticity of the bamboo is converted into a pre-stress that provides compressive resistance for the roof. Through this project, the construction method and limits of heat-bending bamboo are explored.
Compared to wood, which is also a natural material and requires layered gluing and pressing to form bentwood, bamboo can be bent simply by using a blowtorch, without adding any artificial chemical components. I was curious just how far a bamboo tube could be bent.
Therefore, three different curvatures were designed, and skilled bamboo craftsmen were commissioned to discuss and experiment with different construction methods together. During the process, we found that for arches with an extension line angle of less than 60 degrees, it is difficult to bend a whole bamboo tube to the desired curvature. However, it is a different story when using bamboo strips, as various curvatures can be easily achieved. Therefore, we developed a construction method with a bamboo strip in the center and bamboo tubes at both ends to accommodate arches with an angle of less than 60 degrees.
