Between 1946 and 1969, Taiwan's bamboo industry entered a period of development focused on handicraft-based bamboo art. Behind this industrial development, aside from the technical assistance of the Wright brothers' team from the United States and the establishment of the Taiwan Handicraft Promotion Center and the China Productivity Center, was the endless passion for craftsmanship of one most important individual.

Taiwanese bamboo craftsmanship not only inherits traditions from China and Japan, but the indigenous peoples themselves embody bamboo craftsmanship and culture. Furthermore, bamboo has long been widely applied to every aspect of daily life—including food, clothing, housing, transportation, education, and entertainment. Not only that, but some of these techniques cannot even be learned by non-indigenous people!

The formation of an industry relies on the establishment of production and distribution processes for specific products. Although Taiwan has a history of over a century of utilizing bamboo to improve daily life, its industrialization has a history of nearly 80 years. Just how many species of bamboo are there in Taiwan? Lü Chin-ming's "Illustrated Guide to the Bamboos of Taiwan" alone records 89 species, 25 of which are native. Moreover, with the circulation of international goods, there are signs that the number of bamboo species in Taiwan is increasing. Among nearly one hundred species, the economic bamboo species commonly found in the Forestry Bureau's statistics are: Ma bamboo, green bamboo, Changchih bamboo, spiny bamboo, Kuei bamboo, and Moso bamboo.

Taiwan straddles the Tropic of Cancer and should naturally be hot across the entire island. However, its location at a tectonic plate boundary has created towering mountains, resulting in a diverse climate. This has also allowed various regions to develop distinct lifestyles based on their local conditions, connecting different bamboo species with the lives of ethnic groups within their respective environments.
